Ilima Jane Sylva, 69, passed away on March 23, 2016 at Maui Memorial Medical Center. The daughter of Frances R. Fosberg and Violet Oliveira, she was born in Honolulu, HI.
After spending her childhood in Falls Church, VA she moved to O’ahu where she attended the University of Hawai’i. There she fell in love, moved to Maui, married, and had two sons. Soon her life was full of adventure as she traveled across the country living in Boulder and Nederland, CO; Mt. Shasta, CA; Sheridan, WY; and Ashland, OR before returning to Maui.
Ilima’s skills as a bookkeeper allowed her to lend her assistance to both Conversations with God and Humanity’s Team. These organizations supported her beliefs in the divinity and connectedness of all people and our ability to create peace and harmony.
A woman full of love, Ilima volunteered at Haku Baldwin Center in the therapy horseback riding program. Her strong belief in our ability to make our world better thrust her into political activism, including engaging in-person with her congresspeople and presidential candidates.
Having already traveled across the U.S., Ilima chose to journey further afield in her later years. After a cruise to Alaska, she visited the United Kingdom and took a train trip across Canada with her sisters. The memories of these journeys comforted her in her final days.
Her greatest joy in life was truly her family. Ilima leaves behind to cherish her memory, sisters, Hildie Osley, Karol Bradford & Charlen Kyle; sons, Devin (Amanda Schaefer) Sylva & Brendan (Cindi-Jade) Sylva, granddaughter, Hannah Sylva; grandson, Kumulipo Sylva, and many wonderful nieces, nephews, and all those who have been her ohana.
